PREPARATION FOR PREGNANCY

BACKGROUND:

A Fact well known among those who breed race horses, champion dogs, cattle, and other animals is that the best outcome is achievable when the health and vigor of both prospective parents are optimal at the time of conception. Yet with breeding human beings, who we seem to regard as more complex than animals, the whole thing is left to chance.

Preconception care is not a new concept. Not only can advice be found in the Bible (Judges), it is a part of many traditions passed from generation to generation, and is sometimes regarded as "old wives tales". Many native tribes had specific times for marriage to ensure that the bride and groom had had a few months of highly nutritious diet.

A study conducted by the Foresight preconception program in England yielded the following results:

Out of 367 couples included in the study 327 (89%) of the women became pregnant and 327 children had been born.

In remarkable contrast to the couples' previous experience, all their babies were born healthy and well developed at birth, which occurred from 36-41 weeks

Average birth weight was 3265 g

None were malformed and none were transferred to special care baby units

Among 204 couples with infertility problems, 175 (86%) had achieved healthy pregnancies

Among the 367 couples:

217 (59%) had a previous history of reproductive problems

136 (37%) had suffered from infertility from 1 to over 10 years

139 (38%) had histories of 1to 5 miscarriages

11 (3%) had given birth to a stillborn child

40 (12%) had a previous child who was small for dates

15 (5%) were of low birth weight

7 were malformed

3 infants died of SIDS

Commonest complaints among prospective parents were fatigue, headaches/migraines, cold feet, back pain, abdominal bloating and constipation.

WHO SHOULD CONIDER PRECONCEPTION CARE

  1. Normal healthy, fertile couples who want to be the best for their babies
  2. Couples who have general infertility problems with or without known cause, including problems with sperm count, motility, anovulation, etc
  3. Couples with single or recurrent spontaneous abortion
  4. Couples with a previous history of malformation, prematurity, low birth weight, stillbirth, or SIDS
  5. Couples seeking preconception advice for IVF, GIFT, and IUI. Couples preparing for a healthy baby and also hoping to increase the chances of conception where success rate is already low (25% at best for IVF)
  6. Older couples including women over 40 years, especially for help in preventing Down's syndrome
  7. Couples where one of the partners has a malformation or chronic health problem such as epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, eczema, asthma, migraine etc.

THE COMPONENTS OF PRECONCEPTION CARE

  1. DIET
  1. Organically grown produce and free-range meats
  2. Avoid food additives, artificial flavors and colors, and preservatives
  3. Eat right for your baby
    • a unique approach to maximizing your health pioneered by Dr. D'Adamo
    • compatibility of the prospective parents
    • Type O - A&B antibodies, no antigens
    • Type A - B antibodies, A antigen
    • Type B - A Antibodies, B antigen
    • Type AB - no antibodies, A&B antigens
    • Several studies have concluded that some cases of infertility and habitual miscarriage are due to a reaction between the antibodies in the woman's vaginal secretions reacting with blood type antigens in the man's sperm as well as incompatibility with blood type antigen of the fetus
    • Dr. D'Adamo theory postulates that these incompatibility reactions are provoked by eating wrong foods for your type, I.e. when you eat foods that incompatible with your blood type, you produce higher amount of antibodies and thus incompatibility between different blood type partners are exaggerated.
    • Furthermore, the antibody-antigen reactions that are due to wrong for your blood food consumption, dramatically affect the health of the prospective parents - weakening immune system, upsetting metabolic and hormonal balance, upsetting digestive processes thus inadvertently causing malnutrition and decreased absorption of vitamins and minerals
  1. Identification and treatment of bacterial, parasitic, and fungal infections in the genitourinal tract and gastrointestinal tract
  2. - May contribute to infertility, miscarriages, chronic illness of the child, malabsorption of nutrients, endotoxicity

  3. Identification and treatment of heavy metal toxicities and other environmental pollutants
  4. - embryotoxicities, birth defects, carcinogenic effect, DNA mutations, increased rate of spontaneous abortion, neurotoxicity, and immune toxicity.

  5. Identification and treatment of hormonal imbalances
  6. Appropriate detoxification
  7. Appropriate vitamin and mineral supplementation
